Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The rest of that speech was even better, with more substance.
God, how I miss him, and how desperately we need him now.
Have they perfected that cloning thing yet?!?!?! I'm obligated to reply...
Yes. It's called Sarah Palin. :) Merc, am I really hearing you correctly here? Sarah Palin=Ronaldus Maximus?!
I said "obligatory". I knew her name was going to get mentioned at some point, so I seized the opportunity.
Heh! Right you were.

He sounded so horrible to me when I was 23, and he sounds so great now.
That's like the Twain quote here a few days ago:
“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” Big___Al,
Chicklettes danglin' is as like worms danglin' on hooks. As like baitin'. Weall, don't need a woman to set out conservative principles. As an 18 year old with Carter fatigue and wet behind the ears to politics, he sounded marvelous. He's the first president I ever voted for.
He'd need a 26 ft. ladder to get on to that platform today.
My goodness, I miss Reagan, and this is a wonderful story. Like your comment anent Sarah Palin, Dr. Merc, but I'm afraid her path to success is even thornier than that of Reagan. However, if she is chosen, I'll vote for her in a minute. She has her priorities straight, just as Reagan did.
I remember one interview Reagan did toward the end of his Presidency. Nancy came into the room briefly to ask a question and then exited. Reagan said to the interviewer, "I miss her every tim she leaves the room." Marianne Sorry ... It's "I miss her every time she leaves the room." I hope my husband will say that when I'm gone.
Marianne Do you expect to be going anywhere before your husband? Married a young fellow, did you...
Note to Big Al ... Hope I don't go before he does, but I won't want to hang around long after he departs. When you're in your 80s, everything is sort of touch and go. We'd both love to live into our 90s, so we could watch America get back on an even keel again.
My Old Man is 86, and doing surprisingly well. They build 'em tough in Texas. Marianne He's a fortunate man to have you around, and I'm glad he's doing well. I bet he knows it, too.
big Al, how on earth could he know you're glad he's doing well?
Dang it, buddy... you had to call me on that, didn't you! ;-)
I knew I messed it up the minute I posted it. But yall know what i meant... ...and thanks for my laugh of the day. I always get a number of them--it is my goal in life--but you provided the best.
Here's something you just reminded me of, and certainly not a criticism:
I always wished that I would die after my loved ones. Not because I love this world or my life in it, because I don't... but so as to spare them the pain of seeing me die, because they do love me; and rather taking on the pain of watching them die first. Whew. Some twisted psychology in there somewhere, I'm sure. ;-) So you're actually making an argument for nuclear Armageddon, so you'll all die at the same time.
Gee, the things you read on blog sites! You've only yourself to blame for the things we read on this-here blog, and I appreciate it BTW...
But hmmm, nuclear Armageddon... that does seem like a good resolution! (Please: ATF, DHS, CBS, FBI, CIA, and all you other monoriting agencies, understand that this is just a blog, and I'm just a -sort of- normal guy with no intention of hastening the end of anyone's life except my own, so please don't break my door down tonight, because I'm really tired and I have to work tomorrow in order to pay the IRS.) And if anybody is monitoring my cunning linguistics ("monoriting," above), I was just momentarily tongue-tied.

Speaking of something completely irrelevant (yes - irrelevant is now a word much to my dismay - kind of like the whole quote/unquote thing), how hard would it be to optimize Maggie's Farm for smart phones? I spend more time on my phone looking at this and that and the regular page takes an extraordinary amount of time to load. ('Droid Incredible). Other sites have a mobile redirect. Just curious.
RE: The Magnificent Ronald - there are people in this world who are natural born leaders - they have the charisma, the quick wit and brains to know when they are outclassed intellectually so they co-opt the smart people to their cause. He was a master at it. Plus he had a clear vision of where the country was and where he wanted the country to go and could articulate those concepts and ideas to the citizens. Sadly, Sarah Palin is not the second coming of Ronald Regean - I wish she were. I'm looking more toward Bachmann (sp?), but the conventional GOP will never, EVER, allow a woman to head the ticket so we'll lose the Presidency in 2012 because there will be a "centrist" candidate to who "appeal to the broader moderate Independents" and centrist Republicans while paying little attention to the conservatives. The main stream GOP will never allow the conservative wing to take over again. I'm beginning to think that it is time for the (drum roll and ominous music) THIRD PARTY candidate. If the 'conservative wing' was a truly coherant monolithic group it probably could take over the Republican party. However it is very factioned and the best we can hope for is a moderately conservative (fiscal, social, libertarian, pick your cause) coalition. I'll take that anyday over the leftist influenced left of center Democrats we have today.
3rd parties don't work in a winner take all system like ours. What you're advocating is a parliamentary form which has all sorts of issues of its own. Tom takes it all back. He's deeply ashamed of his words. He had just seen the light of truth in this page and was suffering from the usual resultant fever and delerium readers always go through when they realize "Doc wuz right!"
I suffer from it myself, sometimes. And that is exactly why there will never be a woman at the head of any political party's national Presidential ticket. Thank you for proving me right - once again.
What if the woman candidate is ugly, or old, or both? I'd suggest that photochopping her wouldn't be quite as dramatic as those Palin pics.
"Thank you for proving me right - once again." You were right once before?? (scratching head) If she was old, ugly or both, she wouldn't even be considered.
There will never be a woman heading up the ticket for either party - EVER.

I would like to think that is the case, but unfortunately there just aren't enough true social or political conservatives anymore. The mission of the GOP has changed - moderation in all things is now the mantra of the day because to win elections you have to win Independents. Additionally, the average "conservative" has been conditioned to accept the "gray" area of moderation as being conservative rather than the stark black/white line drawn in the sand type conservative. It has become more important to be re-elected than to actually stand up and put your position and politics on the line and state in clear, concise terms how you view an issue.
Seems like more of a problem with the U.S. electorate than the Republican party who has simply designed itself to win.
Tom -
Impossible, I'm afraid. The software has long been out of development and it'd take a real PHP whiz ($$) to step in and handle it. Perhaps you could buy one of those "computer" things I've read about and use it for Maggie's during those brief moments when you're not on the phone? "THIRD PARTY candidate." If you want to guarantee a Democratic win, that's certainly the best way to go about it. Perry/Bachmann 2012? 1 - I don't spend a lot of time at or near a computer anymore so I tend to rely on my smartphone more than a computer. It just takes a second to whip out the phone and check something on Google, or check the marine chart (by the way, that is a really cool deal - Navionics has their entire navigation packages on smartphone platforms now - it's pretty damn amazing) and (2) I find that my computer time is greatly reduced by useing the smartphone rather than a computer - in particular if I'm sitting out on the porch or grilling fresh caught striper or cat fish, etc. A lot of sites have recognized this and have optimized for mobile - well hey, it was just a thought.
With respect to Perry/Bachmann - nah, that ain't gonna happen - male lead, female second fiddle again? Nope - just ain't gonna happen. The Democrats didn't follow up with Mondale/Ferraro, the GOP will not follow up after the diaster of McCain/Palin. It would be more likely the other way around, but the establishment GOP will not allow that to happen. You heard it hear first - it will probably be Perry and Huntsman in some order - not sure who will head the ticket, but that's what is likely to happen at this juncture. Maybe Thune if he gets moving immediately, but I don't think he really wants it. That really horrible, awful, ugly truth is that President Obama is beatable - and beatable by a huge margin, but two things stand in the GOP's way - (1) The GOP itself and (2)the lack of a clear vision of where they want to take the country. The view from over here... in New Zealand.
The Republicans problem (yes it is if you want to get elected as President) is the weird mixing of Fundamental Christian views with Economic Conservatism. I find it strange that a significant portion of the Founding Fathers were clearly atheists yet it seems impossible for any candidate to state anything other than Christian views. Demographically that will become increasingly Catholic. At present it seems that to get elected you might need a soft-Christian, pro-abortion, pro-modest gun control platform. So much for the Tea-Party because this leaves everyone else voting for the other guy. Down under yall tend to put our things upside down, hawk.
But it's okay cause yall cain't vote in USA. US Constitution is Christian document yall might benefit to read, someday sport. Platform yall suggest is what Democrats be reeking havoc with today and it will not be a winner for USA Republicans. |
