Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I need help finishing this, but it's stuck in my head now (thanks alot, Bird Dog!)
"If you get caught between Michelle and a tamale The best that you can do... The best that you can do is (aaarghhhhh)..." No, I'm not a pirate. Apparently not a poet either. I read the "grain yields" article in the WashPost this morning titled "Global warming already crimping crop production, pushing prices higher"
I was intrigued by this line: QUOTE: Production of rice, which thrives in warm temperatures, and soybeans, which are largely grown in regions that did not experience much warming, were not affected by climate change. So, why did they use the word "Global"? "What If Everyone Had a California State Pension? - A thought experiment on how much more bankrupt we could be" Ah, it's nice to see some of that good old fashioned Maggie's Farm-style California bashin' taking place. I always feel a certain emptiness inside when the daily links don't mention it. I did, however, find this quote from the article of particular interest: QUOTE: In 2009, the average per capita income in New York was $46,957 yet a significant number of public employees significantly exceed that amount. Examples include public school teachers in New York City and Long Island who have incomes exceeding $100,000, Police Officers on Long Island who earn on average $125,000 and employees of the MTA, Metro North who earn on average $87,000 per year. While there is nothing wrong with negotiating a fair salary and benefits, reason has gone out the window when the average Nassau County cop cashes out with on average $250,000 excluding their pension. Whoops, wrong article! That was from this. Sorry for the mistake, everybody. Please keep using California as your whipping boy, Maggie's, as any hard-core, right-wing political site should. "That's a good way not to get lucky tonight" Using the world 'lucky' in its most generous sense. :) "Using the world 'lucky' in its most generous sense."
Good laugh, Dr. Mercury. Yeah... if I woke up next to that, luck wouldn't be one of the words that would come to mind... Tablets: Tell you what - I'm using my brandy new iPad as we speak and it rocks!! I didn'get the 4G version but wifi only. With all the hot spots around you really don't need the 3/4G capability. I've never been an Apple fan viewing Steve Jobs as the Anti- Christ but I have to admit this is very cool. I even have marine charting software on it and that rules. The only downside is that the GPS software needs 3/4G - no independant GPS reciever. And no Flash but I can't see that continuing for very much longer as Flash is the defacto standard for Web video. I know Jobs would like to force everybody to QuickTime but I can't see that happening anytime soon.
As a book reader its pretty good. Not quite as good as my Nook but it still is very good. Re: Remedial History Student
I was going to say that Laurence O'Donnell had to be the biggest fool on TV "news" but then there are so many others to choose from on MSNBC. He is so pompous about what we "know" now and how "wrong" we were. I guess he and the other lefties who make the same claim would have cavalierly ignored the common knowledge of every intelligence agency in the world as well as the previous president, Bill Clinton, and ignored Saddam. Boy would they have had egg on their faces if they were wrong! Unfortunately, the stakes were a lot higher than that. We Brits don't need advice on dealing with terrorists. We defeated the IRA ( who operated with American supplied funds and weapons) and will deal with the islamonazis in our own way, don't underestimate our will and purpose.
My husband just read my computer screen and enjoyed the picture of the lovely young thing who went fishing without her clothes. In response to the heading "finding good in bad girls" he muttered, "most of us are more interested in finding bad in good girls." I refrained from suggesting that at 86, he probably couldn't cope with more than one girl at a time, anyway.
Marianne Note to A. Barton Hinkle: I happen to like broccoli, but I'll eat it on my own terms and damn well will resist any government regulation that says I MUST eat it.
Just because some people think that what a government claims it has the power to do is "good public policy' does not make it Constitutional, no matter what you write, you silly goose. In fact, if the SCOTUS eventually declares the individual mandate imposed by ObamaCare violates the Constitution, then all the nanny state initiatives you cite as "good public policy" will come to an end. Sure, the broccoli argument might backfire, but only if the SCOTUS no longer believes it has a duty to uphold the Constitution. |
