Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Very good deals

At The Teaching Company. Got the set of 3 Medieval History courses for $160 (usually $750).


Mrs. BD and I live on their courses. There is no reason in the world to watch the crap on TV (except NCIS). I think The Teaching Company is part of the future of education, unless education is about credentials instead of learning.

I love the teaching company audio courses, and the three courses by Philip Dalieder (sp?) on Medieval History are simply fabulous. I add my recommendation to bird dog's

I think MIT has some free courses, no?

I wonder if there is a good page listing current courses available with the links etc., that would be a very good thing to bookmark.

MC, I have been collecting links to free courses on the web for a short while. My list so far:

Last but not least is Einztein (einztein.com) which is a social media-like site where you can preview courses.

The Peloponnesian War, by Prof Kenneth Harl. A great one. 6 hours but much easier to get through than reading the 4 volume history by distinguished Yale Prof Donald Kagan, or Thucydides' history, for that matter. chuck

I just finished Skeptics and Believers and of the several dozen I've been through that one is tops

My Dad pointed out that they have 3 or 4 of the courses on sale for $10 through the end of the month. 3 of the 4 are DVD only

If you want to encourage kids to learn medieval history, then check out the board game entitled Medieval Alliance. Good stuff, and it's loaded w/ period-specific fine art images.

It comes highly recommended, from what I've heard ;)

As for TV, I only watch cartoons (Avengers and Young Justice) and HGTV.

Skip the CS Lewis course by the guy at Houston Baptist. I am a big fan of Lewis, but that fanboy was over the top.
