Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I don't mind Obama so much as the news media coverage.
News is a business, but its product is not news. It is you. They sell you to advertisers. Unfortunately there's no good business model for news viewers, because people won't regularly watch news except for one-off events, which won't pay the bills. One group though will tune in every day, news or no news, provided there is soap opera narrative. Which is easy to supply, and there you are with your mainstrean news business model. Nothing will air that will lose the interest of soap opera women, lest they tune away. So Obama gets soap opera coverage, and every national debate is edited entirely by the tastes of As the World Turns. Soap opera women is only 40% of women, not a majority. It's enough to disqualify women as a class from voting, though. Ohhhh . . .look at all those good little "Christians" giving away the land, the vote, and the national identity. Boy aren't they courageous and oh so giving. But then we have the other side of the Judeo/Christian strategy. They are exempt from national law, so what do the poor slobs in the middle do? You know--those folks who grew up believing there was a nation to which they belonged, owed an obligation, and offered freedom and opportunity and protection against crimes? What about the rest of us? You will note please that those geographic areas which have become the most eager "to share" with millions of illegal immigrants--are those areas which were first settled and maintain a strong Scandinavian presence--Seattle, Minneapolis, are two examples of folks committed to giving away your inheritance!
Examples of Privilege
Being able to… •assume that most of the people you or your children study in history classes and textbooks will be of the same race, gender, or sexual orientation as you are •assume that your failures will not be attributed to your race, or your gender •assume that if you work hard and follow the rules, you will get what you deserve •success without other people being surprised; and without being held to a higher standard •go out in public without fear of being harassed or constantly worried about physical safety •not have to think about your race, or your gender, or your sexual orientation, or disabilities, on a daily basis... You're sure this isn't from the Onion? I truly hope Trump runs for president, and wins. He is the opposite of politically correct, in a way NONE of the others are. He is what we need. I never gave a darn about him one way or the other before, but since he started running for President, I have the utmost respect for the guy. It takes a lot of courage to be this truth-telling in our super hypocritical society.
Re Patheos:
Good luck with that. If I had been Grand Poobah of the KKK c.1970 and announced that I: 1) wanted to destroy the black family 2) Wanted to destroy black schools and 3) promised to kill 10s of millions of blacks over the coming decades. What would the public reaction have been? Dem policies have resulted in all those things (the killing coming via abortion) and yet blacks STILL vote democratic 90% of the time. In view of the evidence, what chance does the GOP have? "The enviros changed their minds about natural gas: Now they hate it. "
Well, that's what Greens do--form circular firing squads. All right. Enough.
Look, I'm usually pretty respectful of a state's sovereign right to exist; for example, I have no use at all for Iran but I don't doubt its right to be there. But that's it for Bolivia. OK, sure, they once did the world a big favour by getting rid of Che Guevara for us but that was a while ago now. So I'm sorry but that's it. I always thought Bolivia and Paraguay were the least credible of the sad batch of countries cooked up after Bolivar et al. got done with the continent. Bolivia - it's over! You've had nearly 200 years to sort yourself but I'm afraid it's just not working. We're chopping you up and giving the bits to Chile, Peru, Argentina and maybe even Brazil (but none for you, Paraguay, you're still on double-secret probation). Ok,ok, so it was easier to stand up in front of a bunch of 9th graders and talk about how much you hated Pres. Regan, much easier than painstakingly walking the room and teaching intro to algebra (which is what you were getting paid to do). Ok, ok, so it was much more fun to take the 6th graders on a school bus (driver and bus paid for by tax payers)downtown Seattle to demonstrate against something the teacher's union didn't approve of. Yeah that was a lot more fun than taking them to the aquarium and making them understand biology, chemistry, physics, etc. Ok, ok, so it was a lot more fun getting them to write about how much they hated the things you taught them to hate, much more fun than doing the time consuming grading of papers that discussed literary analysis of an important piece of literature. Oh, and speaking of literature--wasn't "the color purple so much more fun than Dickens, or Steinbeck, or, or, or?
