Positively 4th Street (photos)

Pics from yesterday afternoon. The East Village (not to mention the Lower East Side) has become a wonderful, youthful neighborhood, and the old walk-up "tenements" seem just fine abodes for the youth who flock to NYC although they lack the doormen, gyms with pools, laundry rooms etc. that the new buildings offer. The rents, alas, are not cheap in these old places -

I like the lamp post in the last pic. And yeah, rooms in the area used to be cheap, like $15/mo in the sixties, you just had to get past the smell of urine at the entrances.

My cousin has lived in SoHo for decades. When I last visited, there was an issue with nighttime noise from all the bars and clubs in the area, an issue which had not been there before.

I didn't notice the open air drug-selling bazaars I had once seen, though I am certain that those who know the area could have pointed some out.

I was surprised to see some new construction in the area.

The future Mrs. Ben David lived there when we were first going out - in a walk-up whose halls were decorated with pizzeria-style murals.

Of course everything was cheaper and filthier in those pre-Giuliani days.
