We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
After a 10-year borrowing binge, the upcoming budget is expected to spend more on debt than public universities or state parks. Next year's repayments — $7.65 billion — could make up a quarter of the deficit….
Without that tab, officials could scrap plans to close state parks, force nearly a million low-income children to go without eye care and take in-home aid away from hundreds of thousands of elderly, blind and disabled residents….
Because of its rock-bottom credit rating, California pays a premium for its loans. Taxpayers must fork over roughly $2 for every $1 borrowed — about 20% more than top-rated states, said Matt Fabian, an analyst at Municipal Market Advisors, a bond research firm.
It is often said that anti-Israeli feeling is growing in the West because Israel does not, despite its claims, live by Western values. I sometimes wonder if the opposite is the case: Israel, because of the constant threat to its existence, reminds us of the high cost of defending our freedoms. And that, to Western wishful thinkers, is intensely irritating.

Homosexuality sensitivity training for frontline troops: "I am gonna guess that many units will be on patrol the day that the Sergeant Major and his merry band of Power Point Rangers show up to tell the hardest men on the planet (WOW!, was that a bad metaphor) how to get along with girls who dress and act like boys, but "like" girls, and men with awesome fashion sense and a passion for the color fuchsia."
The article mocking the Oscars is a great example of "biting the hand that feeds you." Consider the fact that it's on a site called "Big Hollywood" -- but without showcase events like the Oscars, Hollywood wouldn't be big.
And I agree with the first commenter in the 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' article. The song's obviously not about racism, but the cruel, merciless corporate plutocrats and their effort to keep us crushed beneath the imperialistic jackboot of authority. Classism, in other words. And the Aussies can't see that? It's right there in the words!
It would be an important step forward if you could get the Barrister to talk about "the lists". You know the lists that are kept by the local bar association. The lists that tell lawyers whose case cannot be accepted. The lists that legal secretary's have access to in order to get a heads up on a case, or person.
While your at it you might also get him to explain why/how it is that when lawyers from out of state first decide to accept or decline a case they "give it some thought", a few days go by and they decline the case. Could it be they call someone in the state in which the crime/offense occurs? I once called a lawyer out of state and he called me back and said, "thank you--your calling here was really beneficial to us!" Meaning that when he called someone in the state in question there was a nice exchange of benefits--he declined the case in exchange for???
Get someone in the legal community to make public this practice and you will have done a great deal for restoring a system of justice in America. The Barrister knows . . .he could explain.
