Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Snow on the roof

It's always been said that snow on the roof is an indication of good home insulation. It is true. Attic floor insulation is supposed to be R-49.


Ice damming is almost a bigger problem, though. Attic ventilation and a good overhang seem to help that nasty problem.


Water and housing do not mix. We believe in the steeply-sloped roof for snow country.

I don't know about you, but no matter how much I damn the ice, it comes back every winter!
With the economy in the toilet and global cooling, we're going to experience "Hell freezing over" firsthand.

I don't know...ice dams are how I got my second shower.

Every year we get a massive ice dam on the addition. No matter what we do, it's just keeps coming back.
And we've never had any damage from it.

We had four feet of snow on our roof this winter and had to shovel it off - I figured it out, 30 tons of snow on that hip roof. Unreal. Fortunately, no damage to speak of.

And I don't care anyway because we sold the house, moving south in March where, this beautiful morning, it's 65ºF, wind out of the south at 5-10, song birds are singing and I'm sitting out near Bomb Island on Lake Murray waiting for the stripers to hit with the sunrise. Live bait if anybody is interested at 90 feet - blue back herring on a yo-yo rig. This is the life dudes. :>)
