We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The Economist would do well to read Rodney Stark's book, "The Victory of Reason: How Christianity Led to Freedom, Capitalism, and Western Success" it offers a similar history of Europe's rise compared with "The Long Divergence," but with particular attention to the role of Christianity in the matter.
And now that we're on the subject, Capt Capitalism's column is a good one, but one that I've been hearing in church and on Christian talk radio for decades. In fact, I can think of two speakers in particular who made the same points almost verbatim. And it wasn't new to either of them.
Re: NC Gov
For the first time since reconstruction, we have not only a Pubbie House, but a Pubbie Senate. So far, they seem like they're doing ok -certainly the guy in the article sounds pretty good. I just hope they don't blow it.
