We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The president of the American Physical Society released an email back in 2008 lamenting the R&D budget of the Fed Gov't. In that budget R&D went up by 2-3%. However, by the time the APS pres was done, it was a budget cut (with some dubious accounting for inflation and other tweaks), and ultimately a savage cut to the nation's ability to remain competitive technologically.
If a guy who professes to be a scientist, and one who rigorously uses accounting as part of the data to support his hypotheses, is willing to make such dishonest assertions, why would we expect anything less from politicians?
They should all be cut by 100%. When did it become the Federal Government's responsibility to fund Research and Development? Worthwhile research and science will always have plenty of funding - politically motivated crap won't.
Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and the rest seem to do pretty well (and well for themselves) without Uncle Sam's sponsorship. How about we lower the corporate tax rate - about the highest in the world - so corporations and entrepreneurs invest in technology?
These proposals don't change military development which has been far more useful than civilian giveaways. (GPS, satellites, etc...)
