We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Pre-existing conditions

We linked the hysterical HHS scare report this morning. As a corrective, via Front Page's informative Obama’s “Death Panel” Moment,



As Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the conservative Cato Institute rightly pointed out, only about 1% of Americans are ever denied health care coverage due to pre-existing conditions. In fact, a HHS survey administered in 2001 (yes, the same HHS) “found that…only 1 percent of Americans had ever been denied health insurance.”


Medical insurance companies do not deny coverage for most things, but they will deny coverage for the most chronic and expensive ongoing or imminently fatal illnesses. That's one reason to get a job with group coverage: the actuaries know how to handle risk.


The real challenge is life insurance, which is best obtained before you ever get the flu, or God forbid, a major carbuncle.

SSSSHHSHHHH! Next thing you know, the Gummint will take over life insurance, too...... oh, wait a minute...... we already own a piece of AIG....... Nevermind.

OK, a nit to pick: only 1% of Americans have ever been denied insurance. Read it quickly and you might think that only 1% of the applications for health insurance are denied. Lots of people, covered by work, have never had to apply for insurance on their own. But if you do find yourself needing to purchase insurance for yourself and your family, you'd better hope that you haven't been to the doctor for anything but a checkup in the last five years.

That's not to say that our high and mighty government will do anything but make it worse as they get their grubby paws into it.

Insurance for those with pre existing conditions is just an excuse to bankrupt insurance companies. Its insane. Why should I buy dental insurance until I find I need a dozen implants and massive dental work? Who exactly pays for this?

Even the government denies Medicare disability if you are not "currently" insured. I know I worked for Social Security and watched people with fatal illnesses denied disability not because they didn't have social security insurance coverage but didn't meet the "currently" insuranced criteria.


This is you must have worked 5 out of the past 10 years. Forget it if you worked in a non covered employment, the Left doesn't give a flying fk. But they offer SSI to every illegal alien in the world, I amend that, every resident alien who has never paid a day towards social security yet get better coverage than an American who has paid their entire life.

Why not just allow a full credit for medical expenses but to 3,000 per person in an family. Anyone believe this wouldn't save expenses and meet the needs of people?
