We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Hubby and I have been having an ongoing discussion about Gates. I am becoming more and more disenchanted and he continues to try to defend the man. Today's announcement that he is going to China comes in riding on the tail end of what I believe to be a series of betrayals. The most recent action to defame the Captain of the Enterprise and use him as an example on behalf of the Gay community pretty much has tapped out my support for him. Yeah, yeah, I know the Navy did it--BS.
My problem is this--I see Gates for what he is now, always has been and always will be--a kiss up, kick down castrato with no genuine military experience. No amount of time served in the Boy Scouts can compare. (No harm intended to the BSA) Check out his bio here:
Going to China today in the midst of all the political confusion over what will happen to the military budget, over whether or not Gays will weaken our ability, etc.etc.etc. Going over there now has nothing to do with our showing the Chinese some spine, but rather about our showing them a desire to please.
Most importantly I hope that MF folks will not forget this:
I know this event took place under the last president--but it does show what Gates inherited and how he has failed to repair the damage. Can you spell castrato?
