We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I am pleased to read of the universal adoption of the UN declaration on indigenous people's rights. Let the Moslems abandon all their conquered territories and return them to Jews, Christians, Hindus, and Zoroastrians from which they were stolen. And until that injustice is corrected, let no other be corrected.
Eric Hoffer provided a detailed description of what Krugman is doing in his book The True Believer. He indicated that intellectuals are deeply frustrated with their treatment in democratic and capitalist societies. The leaders of mass movements see this frustration as a mechanism by which these motivated, highly intelligent and articulate men may be controlled and channeled into supporting the goals of the movement.
The result is that intellectuals are quickly and easily manipulated into active support for the movement even if it is antagonistic to the intellectual’s best interests. These useful fools are usually the first to be executed once the movement attains political power. After all why would one leave such dangerous men in a position to do mischief?
Two good links at the blog at friendsofmainesmountains... one showing that wind power does nothing to alleviate our reliance on oil, foreign or otherwise; the other showing that wind power actually results in a net increase in pollution and the dreaded carbon footprint where it has been allowed to proliferate (always at taxpayer expense, nary an investor around willing to put his own money into industrial wind - even T.Boone has come around on that one..)
