We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Regarding the "religous left": I notice that many "progressives" who say you can't really legislate morality like sexual conduct (and I agree with them) are in a big hurry to legislate morality like charity.
If you should let me make my own decisions about adult sexual conduct, you should let me make my own decisions about charity. What a concept.
Continuing the theme: when George Bush had more conservative religious leaders in, we were told that we were under threat of a theocracy of some kind. But when His Hopeful Changeness the Immaculation (HHCI) has "progressive" or Islamic religious leaders in, wer'e told he's just seeking guidance.
A demand for generosity (contradiction in terms) is as much a theocratic demand as a demand for sexual continence or temperance or church attendance.
