We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

...we find, at our local Borders book store, a small paperback titled The Anti-American Manifesto, written by Ted Rall. In this book the author says that America is collapsing. The U.S. is going to end soon. According to Rall, "There's going to be an intense, violent, probably haphazard struggle for control. It's going to come down to us versus them." Rall is a Communist in Chambers' sense of the word. He warns the "downtrodden and the educated" that the hardcore uneducated fundamentalist Christians are preparing to seize power. According to Rall, "They can't wait to unleash their venomous hatred on the city-dwelling commie hipster fags they despise. They are armed. They recognize that the system is doomed. They've seen this coming." He names the Tea Party as the main decentralized organ of the enemy. "A war is coming," he says. "The government, the corporations, and the extreme right are prepared to coalesce into an Axis of Evil. Are you going to fight back? Will you do whatever it takes, including taking up arms?" He basically suggests that the Right is coming to exterminate the Left, so the Left had better get ready. The book is basically a call to civil war -- American versus American.

Not raising the debt ceiling does nothing but damage, and damage that the dems would welcome.

I don't know how many times the repubs have to learn that. Change the party symbol to the rhinoceros.

We have our share of native Eastern Brookies in the NE corner also, but our problem is keeping the habitat from deteroriating - and not from development.

For some reason the DEP, guided by some insane logic, decided that all stone dams (meaning farm and mill dams built over the past two centuries) had to be breached - in particular where they ran under state roads, but they expanded that to include town roads. Additionally, beaver dams that backed up more than 1 acre of water were broken, beavers trapped and relocated. Streams that were healthy and ran water all year 'round 20 years ago, are now dry even in Winter only running in the Spring runoff or heavy rain.

Apparently, this is supposedly because of 50/100/1000 year flooding plans - they were supposed to build new bridges to avoid collapse in the grand apocalypse, but none of them were built - the only ones rebuilt were those than ran over rivers like the French, Quinebaug, Shetucket, Yantic, etc.

There are small streams here in NE CT that still hold native brookies and have small breeding populations - there are three in my area, but I ain't telling where they are. Fortunately, they run through areas that are designated non-development so they will still be streams for a while.
