We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I agree with Professor Richard Lindzen from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who said: “future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st century’s developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and, on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a roll-back of the industrial age”.
Our Congress is deeply, embarrassingly incompetent. Willful incompetence in my view is simply the equivalent of corruption. Incompetence which springs from ignorance is merely stupidity at work. Whether the current Democratic leadership of Pelosi and Reid is one or the other doesn't really matter. Of course, I have an opinion. But the result is the same.
Our knowledge of historical weather is vague at best. We can guesstimate when it was warmer or cooler but only within a wide band. This winter may be unusally cold in Europe, or in parts of Europe. It may even prove the coldest in record-keeping history. Instruments and methods have changed enough that a valid comparison is nearly impossible within the instrument record and impossible for the time before instrument records.
I've lived through too many predictions of drastic climate change to get very excited until it happens. If it's going to happen, we need to be ready -- whether warmer or cooler. Because we aren't driving that train and it will happen regardless of us.
