We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Selling Hayek on TV

The UK's Standpoint on Glenn Beck:



We scoff at America and its media and especially its talk-shows, perhaps rightly so. But can one imagine The Road to Serfdom on Richard and Judy (or on Newsnight, come to that), or A Patriot's History of Britain anywhere? From where I stand, one American "shock jock" is doing as much for public education in politics and history as all the BBC's networks put together.



I would not term Glenn a "shock jock" unless basic, grade-school history is shocking. But maybe it is, and maybe it should be shocking. America was meant to be a shockingly new kind of thing.

I think Beck tries to shock. While I usually agree with his content, I find his melodramatic style a turn-off.

I beleive that they are referring more to Glenn's long history with radio, including his current show, and also perhaps his "controversial" Libertarian views.
Personally, I think EVERYONE should own a copy of The Road to Serfdom, but maybe that's just me...

I learned all the grade school history i could stomach while in grade school and don't need a mamby pamby boy-girl to brush me up.

It was distortion then and is from Beck-mouth, now.

But i suppose Junkie, yall need refresher courses.

Gosh, Leag, you're being even more tiresome than usual today. Apparently, any "grade school history" you had didn't take. Nowadays, students in grade school don't get exposed to much history at all. They get taught to sing silly songs praising our current President instead. And we know where that leads.

Maybe you just didn't listen.

Rest assured now, yall's defence of Jeff the whiner comes as no surprise and i listened in grade school and that's all the grade school history me desire.

Last time me listened to Beckler on radio he was assuaging
poor moderate muslims.

He's a simpleton who's appeal rests in nescients.

I am no youngster. I learned none of that in grade school, or even during my degree work.

It angers me that the educational elite have gutted our history.

I am reading a grade school (published 1880) book that is putting me in better context and understanding of history than anything that went before.

My son handed it to me - exasperated that I didn't "know history". He was right, I don't. BUT I am remedying that situation.

The book: "The Story of Liberty" by Charles C. Coffin ISBN 0-938558-20-X

Yes, it is basic. Just what I need, B.A. notwithstanding.

If Beck was the guy that appealed to most of us here, Hayek's book would not be selling so well. He is a showman and a self promoter. But he is hawking the truth as far as I can see it.

I read The Forgotten Man and The 5000 Year Leap after hearing him talk about them. So I don't like the residue of the shock jock but I do like the message.
