Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, September 24. 2010Thanks! With my final question: What's your destination? Thanks to all who have taken the time to respond to my questions this week. My final question is just for fun. You have just won a one-week trip, all expenses paid (except gratuities), with however many passengers the airplane can hold (or fewer), on a round trip flight on a G-650 to anywhere - but only to one destination to which the airplane can fly non-stop - and an airport on which it can land. What's your destination? Trackbacks

That's a tough one.
As of today I'd say Siracusa, but my answer might be different tomorrow. Flight from LA to Sydney, Australia. 6500 nm.
G650 max range: 7000 nm. At .995 Mach... Only way to get there faster is the Concorde (RIP). Just one way please, and load it up with Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd, and so forth. Send it to remote special forces camp in Afghanistan.
Darn. Almost forgot. Maybe the Seychelles, for a week of fishing.
My bucket list is too long, and my bucket too shallow... Today? "On the Border", a purportedly texmex mexican restaurant for some half decent food. There are better but that is the choice of our eating partners for this week.
For this we get to discuss the state of the economy by direct observation. I don't think we have been in a single restaurant in the last 5 months on a Friday night (or any night) that was full at anytime during our visit (usually 6-ish to 7-ish). If it can go from Florida to Michigan in one go, I'd take my family to visit Mom.
And eat a few times at Buccilli's Pizza, on the south shore of Houghton Lake. It is the world's best. There is none higher. I seriously thought of mentioning Sebewaing, Michigan, even if it's not quite whatt it used to be.
No where.
I am happy here. Perhaps I could collect a check in lieu of the trip? Llao Llao Resort and Golf Spa, Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina
And we will be delighted to pamper you and your party here in paradise!
Nora Espector Rooms Division Manager Llao Llao Hotel & Resort Bariloche Patagonia Argentina nespector@llaollao.com.ar Just to provide a little info... the cabin layouts range from 11 to 16 passenger capacity. Max range, with 8 passengers (+4 crew), is 7,000 nautical miles (LA to London, NY to Bejing). Don't plan too exotic though, still need a runway that can handle jets this big.
Going nowhere for me and mine, though. Gratuities not included and I couldn't afford to tip the cabin crew on this sucker. Oh well, easy come, easy go. So many places...
Can I lay make a fuel stop in LA from the US east coast? If so - I choose Cairns or Port Douglas Australia. Then on to the great barrier reef. Fishing, diving, general sight seeing. One of the most beautiful places on earth. I would take my family and a close friend or to Thats my choice. If we have time can we hop over to NZ for a day or two? JG I would love to board the plane with spouse and friends with the destination a total mystery .... I would love to experience anywhere, everywhere. Surprise me!
Fly me to Paris,France...
I hear the fries are better than in Paris,Tennessee. Come on now, bring me home. I been living in this same space for a while, but I've got to find my way back home. Taxi down that runway and fly around the ever loving blue sky, but bring me back home before we land in some foreign land. Everything I need is here beneath my feet and within my reach. I love the people I've got in a way that hurts my back. Bring me home and let me get on with the things that make life right here. I'll take a trip to other places when the day is done, but it ain't done yet.
Portland, Maine. I could drive there from NYC, but would rather fly. I'd like to walk along the shore w/ my dogs and my hubby before it gets too cold.
Don't like long trips, so places like Norway (the fjords) are nice in theory, but I'd never go there. I also like mountains, but I can hike in NJ w/ the dogs and the hubby, and it's beautiful and wild, so I don't need a plane. I just look on "Hiking with your dog" and find unbelievably wild places a mere hour from NYC by car. So I don't need a plane. Kenai, Alaska. Hopefully while the kings are running.
As for passengers, just me and Mrs. Animal, please. We've been looking for a chance to take a second honeymoon. Tierra Del Fuego. However, I don't think they have an airport. Oh well........
Huh - good question. I've fished everywhere I want to, caught just about every big game fish that swims in the Seven Seas with the exception of a tiger and lemon shark, seen the Great Barrier Reef up close and personal, I have no interest in seeing foreign lands, foreign sights or foreign people as I haven't even seen all that this continent has to offer. If pressed, I would like to return to Australia, but that is out of the range of the plane from Hartford's Bradley Field.
So if I were given the opportunity to fly in the plane, I suppose I would just ride around and see stuff from the air. Dull and silly I know. Yes, TF. Lame indeed.
If I won this, I'd put you and the Mrs on the plane with us and we'd have a heck of an adventure somewhere new. If I had the choice, alone, London.
But I have a wife. And we have already agreed on our next trip. So it would be Venice. However, since she has the prerogative, she may well change her mind to "somewhere in the Caribbean" and I'd have to agree. After all, a scuba trip is always fun. As for who comes along....well, anyone who enjoys a good time. I've been singularly unsuccessful at finding out how long of a runway this needs.
And I'm somewhat disappointed that answers I see above are largely places that one can get to on scheduled carriers. If I have the opportunity to go anywhere within 7k NM, you can bet your beanie that I won't chose a spot with scheduled service. (genie) "I grant you a means of travel that will remove all difficulty" (douglas2) "Oh, OK, I'll use it to get somewhere that is easy to get to!" -- nope, seems too wasteful. I've got friends in the Andes who are doing teaching, training, and acting as advocates so that peasants will gain title and property rights to the land they've been farming and improving for generations. I think the best use would be to take lots of their friends to see firsthand how we can best support them in their work. It would be a party trip, a reunion trip, a chance to see how kids have grown, and a great experience of a different culture by knowledgeable guides. But only if the thing can land there.... Normandy, I want to see all the landing beaches. So my destination would be Paris.
there are actually airfields that can take a Gulfstream far closer to Normandy than Paris.
So no excuse to sneak of to the Champs Elysee for you :) Bora Bora, French Polynesia. Heaven on earth, great reef and a few really great hotels to entertain the guests!
First choice: Quito, Ecuador, with a connecting charter boat to the Galapagos
Second choice: Skopje, Macedonia to see the cave monasteries around Lake Ohrid Third choice: Persepolis, Persia hmm, always wanted to go back to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. And it's within range (though it may be close, depending on airway coverage) for the 650 from where I live.
Several airports in the area that can accept one (on either end), so no problem landing and getting out again. Firenze.
And no other passengers, thanks. (Though were it not for the potential veterinary bureaucracy involved, I'd take my dog.) London: "When a man tires of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford."
