We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
If the government would just leave the people alone, they could be like the Dominican Republic in 10-20 years. Maybe they will even begin to make cigars as good as today's Dominicans, too.
The fatal flaw of the Left is the assumption - or wish - that some power-hungry elite could be possessed of more virtue or wisdom or omniscience than ordinary people. All of history shows that not to be true. There are no "betters" to rule or to run us.
We regular folks just have to grow up and run our own lives. If they let us.
The government of Cuba will "allow" "some" private enterprise. If the government allows it, it isn't private enterprise.
China may "relax" its one-child policy. Where in wherever does the government of any nation get the right to tell families how many children to have or not have? I know they have the power, but what right?
We do not have rights granted by the government. The government has authority and responsibility granted by us. Or that's what George, Ben, Tom and John and James had in mind.
I am not going to hold my breath. After the demise of Fidel's sugar daddy when the Soviet Union faded into the sunset, Fidel allowed some private enterprise. Fidel soon cracked down on what private enterprise had emerged when he saw that there was an emerging class that was prosperous and independent of state control.
