We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Attorneys for the leftist American Civil Liberties Union are busying themselves with a campaign that would make Saul Alinsky proud. Their target? Catholic hospitals exercising their religious freedom to refuse to perform abortions.
Where would interest rates be if they reflected economic reality instead of being fixed at the short end by committee? The curve would be inverted. The yield curve indicator assumes a semblance of market forces at work not the current manifestation of the FED doling out free money to the system it 'supervises'. Like many indicators in such an environment, the shape of the yield curve is becoming meaningless.
I read NYM's comment on Polanski and am appalled at the comparison.
The protagonist Tom in To Kill A Mockingbird had not touched the young woman who accused him of rape. He didn't engage her in any form of sex and was resisting her advances when her father saw them. Both the woman and the father lied Tom's life away deliberately.
Polanski took advantage of a person in a stage between a girl and a woman. She and her mother had put her in a vulnerable position and Polanski exploited it. The description of the incident sounds very like forcible rape -- certainly more forcible than what many an accused "date rapist" has been arrested for.
The 42 days of confinement were supposed to be an evaluation, not a punsihment -- it occurred before he was convicted of anything. Was Polanski about to be set up for a miscarriage of justice? Maybe so. If so, he had the funds and the lawyers to appeal until hell froze over.
