For a little Friday evening fun I thought I'd cobble together some of the animal videos from my art gallery. Enjoy.
Bird Apes Dog, Horses Around, Pigs Out, Is Catty With Ewe
Here's Einstein the parrot. If you watch him carefully, you'll see that he's got one thing, and one thing alone, on that beady little brain of his:
Her right hand.
I watched three DVDs on training parrots a while back, and they just live for that next snack treat. As with other animals, you find out what treat they like the most and then hold that one back for when they do a trick correctly. The parrots in the DVD were certainly eager to learn — but you can bet it wasn't for learning's sake. Like Einstein, they kept their sharp little eyes on the hand that held the treats almost the entire time.
Which isn't to diminish this bird's exceptional repertoire. Take it away, Einy!
This Dog's No Rummy
Here's 'Gin' and owner doing some freestyle dancing.

Squirrels may not be the brainiest of creatures, but nobody ever said they were dumb.
Cat-astrophes
We all know that cats are refined, elegant, graceful creatures.
Well, usually.
On The Other Hand...
Cats can't talk.
Or...
Can they?
Okay, Color Me Surprised
It usually takes quite a bit to actually surprise me. I could watch a hundred YouTube clips and not actually be "surprised" — outside of the usual surprise over how idiotic some people can be.
But then there's this.
I mean, when an entire new concept comes along — like herding fish — well, color me astounded.
My first thought was that he was using magnets or something under the tank, or maybe a device emitting some sound audible only to fish that they'd been taught to associate with food. But on the third lap, when he strings them out, well, I gotta believe this is real. Did you notice the quick 'come right at me' signal just before he strung them out?
Of course, this'll be one of those things where it turns out that the Chinese have been doing it for 6,000 years. But it was certainly new to me.
And what's just as interesting as the concept of fish being able to be taught, is relating them to the 'animal smart scale', i.e., dogs are smart and bunny rabbits are dumb. Not only did the fish respond to his commands, but they responded instantly. Note how quick his hand movements are as he herds them across the tank near the end.
No dumb bunnies, these.
