Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Yer Editor at work

Yer editor at work, editing the heck out of an overgrown 15-acre boulder-strewn meadow. Photo does not capture the height and density of the overgrowth, nor does it fully capture the Yankee red-neck elegance of the world-famous blog celeb Bird Dog.


We were happy to see that there were still struggling grasses underneath the growth, which will now have a chance to thrive again. I think we will need to mow again in September in an effort to thoroughly discourage the saplings and to give the grasses and wildflowers a good head start next Spring.


We carefully gave a wide berth to a huge Painted Turtle who decided to dig a hole and lay some eggs in the field while we were working. Got some photos. This is the meadow adjacent to the beaver marsh.

By the way, if anyone's wondering, that actually is BD's hair. I've seen three or four pictures of him and it's usually the same hair-do, although it seems to have grown a few inches since the last pic at Christmas. I'm not supposed to talk about his personal life, so let's just say it fits in perfectly with his job as circus clown.

And that handlebar mustache is certainly looking sharp. The big guy's got 'Wild West' written all over him, doesn't he?

Ah, big guy, the adulation, wealth and fame really brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it? It's times like this when you know, deep down inside, that all of those "Chipmunk Of The Week" posts finally paid off. That's how I feel about my Lady Gaga posts. When you've enrichened people's lives on that kind of level, words just can't explain the pride one feels.

And if you don't mow and keep mowing, the forest will take over. Or do what the Indians did and have a controlled burn. This isn't North Dakota. Odds are overwhelming that a meadow in NE is a man-created artifact. For those who object to NE meadows, I have two replies: 1) Man digests grain cattle products and grain (mostly corn in NE) , etc. much more easily than wood; 2) sunlight and long views let in by meadows helps stem depression caused by lack of sunlight. Forests are fine, but the occasional meadow is needed.
