Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The farm, a truck, and birds - with updated list (I forgot a few)

A view of the farm this weekend -



Had too much work to do to spend much time birding this weekend, but I tend to have outdoor situational awareness:


Yellow Warbler, Yellow Throat Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Blue-grey Gnatcatcher, Mallard, Wood Duck, Canada Goose, GB Heron, B Oriole, Turkey Vulture, Wild Turkey, Wood Duck, Red-Tailed Hawk, RT Hummingbird, Blue Jay, Chickadee, Mourning Dove, Catbird, Cedar Waxwing, Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Bluebird, Robin, Kingbird, Phoebe, Wood Pewee, Wood Thrush, Veery, Hermit Thrush, Song Sparrow, Ovenbird, Crow, Raven, Downy WP, Brown Thrasher, Pileated Woodpecker, House Finch, House Wren, RE Vireo,  Black and White Warbler, and numerous unidentified warblers.


Did not see any Meadowlark, Killdeer, or Bobolink. Probably passed through already, but I wish they would make summer homes here. I do not know why they don't.

Bobolinks are active, singing, and nesting in Durham, CT, right now. Should be there until July when they head back to Argentina!

All of these do nest in New England. Not sure why they wouldn't be on your place.

When I first moved to the Keys, I spent the first month having the oddest feeling I was missing something.

"SQUAWK!"

Jet planes? Trains? Loud freeway noises? Nope, those were all gone, and thank the begoodness for it.

No, it was something else.

"SQUAWK!"

And then I realized what it was; a sound that I had heard every single day of my life for fifty-six years.

Songbirds.

And what do I hear every day now?

"SQUAWK!"

Sea birds just aren't the same. Count your blessings.

How large are your grasslands? Need a minimum of 10 acres or more uninterrupted open grassland for bobolinks and other grassland nesters.

Between us and neighbors, I'd say it's about 80-100 acres of hay.

That should be enough, as long as it isn't broken up by hedgrows like in the photo. If it's in pieces like that, no good. Also, you need to delay haying until after Aug 1. You can either have quality hay or grassland birds.

What's on the hood?
Could be the angle , but your tire looks out of whack.
Not a bad job for a baby tree killer. Now go out and get a real truck! Chevy 2500 3/4 ton.

A killdeer is currently nesting in my neighbors driveway - they have "protected" her with a saw-horse. Had another one nest a couple of years ago in our church's gravel parking lot.
