Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Jimmy Reed Week: Big Boss Man

"You ain't so big, you're just tall that's all."


Probably Reed's best-known song, and it's about work, not love. Everybody can relate. Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" echoes this classic in another way, does it not?


As in many of his recordings, you can hear his wife "Mama" chiming in sometimes.

Go, big Mama, go.

He certainly knew what rhythym and blues was all about. Born a decade or two later and he would have been a pure rocker. Listening to this tune, I don't he misses those major sevenths at all.

The harmonica needs a bit of work, though. He's kind of playing it like a melody instrument (like an accordian), rather than demanding the lead, as Dylan does.

He's also got a slighter larger vocal range than I thought. There's an "all night long" around the middle where "long" is a fairly low note and he really nails it.

Keep 'em comin'.
