Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Well said, as a non-Jewish supporter of Israel and what it stands for, I am constantly amazed by the lukewarm understanding many people have of its importance to the security of the United States and of course, its importance to Jews around the world.
Amen brother! I'm also a gentile Israel supporter. I would gladly volunteer to fight for the survival of Israel (as if the IDF needs my help).
I will help them out at the ballot box later this year and again in 2012. Dude....where can I get one of those pins? That's cool!

I have the most profound respect and admiration for Israel and Israelis. Happy Independence day!
Here in Israel we have just made the strange, miraculous transition from Memorial Day to Independence Day - one comes right after the other. This morning was the siren for the moment of silence. This afternoon was various memorial services. Tonight is catching the official torch-lighting ceremony on TV before running out to our town's concert/happening. The fireworks from the bigger cities have started. Got my charcoal and steaks ready for tomorrow... Despite reading many explanations of the phenomenon, I still have no intuitive understanding of the Left's antipathy to Israel (especially in Europe). Even when I was a leftie myself it made no sense to me. We support them not merely out of sorrow for the Shoah - though that might sufficient in itself - but because they are just. Not that their justice is unfailing, for no nation can claim that. But in their area, no other nation even makes the attempt.
I suspect that more than anything, the belief that the whole problem of the ME would just go away if Israel weren't in the calculations drives the animosity. You might review a post I'd written: http://maggiesfarm.anotherdotcom.com/archives/13013-Rules-of-Etiquette-for-Modern-Anti-Semitism.html
Those who direct the memes are hard-core leftists in alliance with Arab satraps. The old Soviet Union initiated the Zionism AS Racism in the '70s, adopted by the UN until retracted years later. They use themes that will appeal to those with real or imagined grievances against the West, those who are avowed enemies of the West, and those domestic deludeds who think peace is primary to survival, or can be bought at the price of survival -- as long as it is someone else's. Their uneasy allies are the lazy and the isolationist, along with vestiges of traditional anti-semitism. Bruce, my friend, and Ben-David ... A Happy 62nd to you and to the great country of Israel. We are blessed indeed to have you both as friends ... even though certain [temporary] Persons in the White House don't know how to behave to friends and allies. Sixty-two is a great age -- old enough to be wise, and young and vigorous enough to enjoy it. Shalom ...
