Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, April 10. 2010Alas, PolandEd Morrissey and Professor William Jacobson inform us about the tragic death in an airline crash of the brave Polish president and a large number of Poland’s leadership, on their way to a joint commemoration with Russia of the 1940 slaughter of 22,000 Polish officers by the Soviet Union. For those of you who don’t recall Katyn, I wrote about it last August.
Wonder what hollow words President Obama will utter now?
As usual from Obama, contradicted by his undercutting of Poland volunteering to host anti-missile defense and his disdain for Polish President Lech Kaczynski when alive. Israel surely gets the point. The New York Times asks: "For Poland, the losses raise the question of how a country of 38 million can replace a whole political class." It had to before and will again, because Poles and their leaders have clearsighted historical memory and courage.

Poland's tragedy is a tragedy for us as well.
Obama does not possess the honor required to make comment. I strongly suspect this is no accident, but a crime of the highest magnitude and the first of many "unexpected" consequences of Obama's so-called foreigh policy.
Obama will certainly want to shout out to his bud, Vladimir Putin. What a ****ing amazing coincidence that one of the few people on the short list of European leaders willing to stand up to Putin goes down in a plane accident along with the cream of the political crop.
Sometimes strange and unlucky things happen in history, but wherever Putin is involved and bad things happen, you're foolish if you immediately think it was luck. As Thalpy says above, "Obama does not possess the honor required to make a comment." But I agree also with Texan99, "Poland is not lost forever." From my memories of the Second World War, I can recall countless acts of heroism by Poles who escaped the depredations of the Nazi war machine and came to England to fight against them with the Allied forces. The Poles are an heroic people traditionally ... highly educated for the most part, with a reservoir of many brilliant and cultured citizens to draw upon.
I am deeply angered by the Obama Administration's abrogation of America's agreement to install nuclear protections in that country, leaving Poland, the Balkans and most of western Europe vulnerable to Russia's revived statist ambitions. Evidently, none of Obama's 'advisers' have mong enough memories to recall Russia's takeover of Georgia just a year or two ago. Poor memories are the curse of poor politicians. Marianne Trying very hard to crank up some sympathy for the Poles... finding it difficult.
These people unflinchingly slaughtered their Jewish neighbors. There was no organized local opposition to the Holocaust in Poland - not among the common people nor among the educated elites killed at Katyn. No foot-dragging or passive obstruction of the German plan. Jews were saved by luck or the decency of individual Poles. Polish partisans sometimes killed Jewish refugees who sought to join them. So what are you saying then, Ben-David? That you're a big believer in ethnic guilt?
That's funny, because I find it hard for the Poles to have any sympathy for the "eternal victims" & "chosen ones". History has been tweaked to hide the fact the bloody bolshevisk revolution was brought about entirely by jews. And they killed far more people then the nazis were ACCUSED of killing jews(incidentally, look at the world jewish populations in any world almanac before & after ww2 to see the population was unnaffected. You would expect a decrease of 6 mil right?) The bolshevik leadership was all jewish except for stalin, Lenin(1/2 jewish). Even the commissars of the Red Army were predominately jewish at the time the Katyn massacre was carried out. And it is well known that Polish jews welcomed the invading bolsheviks & helped round up certain poles for the gulag. So, give up the eternal victim claim. You people are butchers. Look at what you do to the Palestinians today. And you want to cry about nazis and even the poles? You are worse than nazis right now. The chutzpah you have to demand our sympathy.
> "For Poland, the losses raise the question of how a country of 38 million can replace a whole political class."
If one believes that the political "class" of a nation is made up of citizens selected by the people -- and not some separate, specially-bred species, as the NY Times seems to imply -- then one can be confident that the Polish people will rise to the occasion. Ron Brown would have something to say about convenient plane crashes.
Stali..er..Putin is hungry. I don't think the term Holocaust was used or understood until the fall of Nazi Germany. There were "collaborators"in all occupied countries with plenty of chaos as to friend and foe. i have the DVD --"Katyn" --is is a powerful, powerful film. Recommend highly. It's not a documentary at all, but a fully realized story of a family coping with a time and place in living memory. The massacre in the forest comes a bolt out the blue, a "BOOTB" as they say, and the film portrays only at the end the uncomprehending shock of recognition of having been caught in a web of demonic evil.
This was not just an ordinary plane crash. I would not blame Russia for making the plane go down. Instead look at the mossad/Israel and the Marxist Robin Hood in the white house.
