Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Shorter Chris Currey: Rich WASPs used to run the Republican Party. Now we don't, so I'm leaving. The only respectable rationalizations I can give publicly are the accusations the Democrats make. As the rich WASPs are now Dems, they must be right.

My neighbor's friend just called her to announce that her job at a major hospital in Indiana is threatened as occupancy has dropped from over 100% last summer (i.e. waiting list for non-emergency care) to 65% as of March 31. The administrators warned employees that lay-offs are planned for every area of staffing and they may close a new wing. Apparently the powers-that-be had hoped the H1N1 virus would fill beds, but it never materialized. Now people are renewing their insurance with much higher deductibles and don't have the cash to cover a hospital stay...or they don't have insurance because of continuing job loss.

Is this what is called "unexpected consequences"?

Frum and his pals like Currey are straight up asses. I agree that the Southern Baptist contingent of the GOP is sometimes a PITA. Their lack of patrician social style, however, does not automatically nullify the GOP's policy positions.

Frum and friends urge us that when an alligator attempts to eat us, it's nasty to say "NO!" because it would be rude. Instead we should negotiate with the alligator, and split the difference. That way, we'll be popular with the alligators.

I don't mind dissent on policy issues but Frum's constant, overwrought huffing about how he is being persecuted by all of us to his right is getting to be pretty tiresome.
