We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Whatever the new problem—resource depletion, air pollution, acid rain, the ozone hole, or global warming—we always end up back at the same old “solutions”: stop population growth, stop economic growth, stop consuming things, redistribute wealth, go back to small village living, and we’ll all sing Kumbaya. No matter how many times green gloom is discredited (i.e., the Simon-Ehrlich wager), lapsing into the old eco-fundamentalism is just too irresistible.
These days, liberal internationalism is a solution in search of a problem: it is an idea whose time has passed. Liberal Wilsonians must take a long hard look at a world that is not moving toward global governance in any serious way and think about how the values at the heart of the Wilsonian vision can be advanced in a new century.
Even the optics must be irritating. A woman (Nancy Pelosi) pushed the health care bill through the House. The bill’s most visible and vocal proponents included a gay man (Barney Frank) and a Jew (Anthony Weiner). And the black man in the White House signed the bill into law. It’s enough to make a good old boy go crazy.
As a cultural conservative there's so much wrong with Chris Berg's essay. Basically he's defining 'classical liberal' as a Libertarian with which I totally disagree.
The unique problems with Mexican immigration compared to most other immigration that these immigration sycophants can't or won't address are:
1. Proximity...the US/Mexican border is the longest in the world and the development and cultural gap between the two countries are greater than any other border situation.
2. This proximity creates a situation where the immigrants have little motivation to truly integrate to American culture.
3. The more peasants you bring into our country the lower it drags our collective IQ and with the language, IQ, cultural gaps creates a large perminant under class of alienated people...not a good recipe for social peace.
Shut down the borders and start sending illegals home when they run into our legal system.
This would at least stabalize the situation and provide some breathing room to determine what to do about the other several million illegal residents.
