Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Keeping a Gardener's Journal


Well-organized amateur gardeners keep some sort of calendar or journal of annual tasks to be done (eg April: prune forsythias when blooms done), and a record of things planted (with exact names and maintenance needs).


I keep a casual record and to-do list on my computer with links to tips and info that I tend to forget (I do have a lot of plants with Special Needs), but some more serious folks prefer these pre-printed formats.

Doncha think anal retentiveness takes all the fun out of "gardening"? I stick what I like in the ground... most times it grows, sometimes it doesn't. When I don't like it, out it comes and in goes something else. Having to actually WORK at it would take all the fun out of it for me. Like, "what are all these seeds in the country crock tub?" I dunno, stick 'em in the ground and see what comes up.

Since I don't rely on my 'gardening' for sustenance, I do it purely for pleasure. And if the seed packet blows off the stake at the end of a row? Pshaw. Whatever's there will come up or not anyway

Ah yes, that is the Darwinian or Tough Love approach to gardening. Good luck with that!
