Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Train story with a twist(er)


You're the engineer of a great big freight train.  Nothing stands in your way!  What's that?  There's a huge 18-wheeler stalled on the tracks up ahead?  No problem!  You'll cut that tin can in two and just keep on goin'!  Nothing stands in your way!


Well, unless you attempt to drive through a tornado, of course.


But who'd ever do that?

A compliment any blogger would be proud of. :)

You can picture what was said in the engineer's cab in between the two crashes:

"Say, isn't that the tank car full of sulfuric acid headed our way?"

"Why, yes, I believe it is."

I also like the plaintive horn honking away.

"Chief! That looks like something on the tracks far ahead!"

"I'll give 'em the horn! That'll move 'em!"

From age 1 or two onwards, guys never lose their fascination for some or all of these: trains, trucks, excavation equipment, ships, guns, and airplanes.

I think they can only stop so quickly if they "throw out the anchor" as they did.

It looks like something blew off the tracks a few cars back and that dragged the cars ahead of it off.

Why it didn't just decouple instead, leaving you with a shorter but functional train, I don't know.

I agree, it looks like the first car to go off the tracks was five or six cars back. As far as the cars not decoupling, I also thought that was kind of odd. You'd think it would be some kind of 'breakaway' hitch so a car derailing wouldn't pull everybody else off with it. On the other hand, it was the uncoupled boxcar that skewed the tank car off to the side, possibly avoiding a direct collision and immolating everyone within a quarter mile. The sparks flying ahead of the tank car were especially hairy.

Great link, thanks. I thought this line from the post was interesting:

"Things get pretty good about 1:00 and again at 1:25."

When it comes to train wrecks, you usually don't see the word "and".

Great photos, too. Tornadoes are, indeed, nasty beggars. Back when I was living in central Florida, we'd get clobbered with some of the nastiest thunderstorms in the book and nobody would blink an eye. But when the news or radio flashed a tornado warning, everybody paid attention.
