We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Why does knowledge disappear with age? I mean, when I was a teenager I knew everything. Now? Not so much. I have been watching the same process unfold in my boys (now mid 20s). What an amazing progression to go from know-it-all to know that they don't know-it-all. I used to call my dad for advice once in awhile and he'd just laugh and laugh and tell me welcome to the club. I get to pass the same sage advice on now. Entropy happens and so does, occasionally, wisdom.
“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished by how much he'd learned in seven years.”
I love that Twain quote, JJM. I was trying to call it up out of my no longer quite so capacious memory when I read the Wilde quote. Thanks for reminding me.
My favorite Wild quotes are "We may all be in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars" and the other "Wars start when diplomats lie to journalists and then believe what they read"
And perhaps a Twain---"If stupidity got us into this mess why can't it get us out"
