We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Every large and important society has its sins. The people of Iceland maybe not, but Iceland is a tiny society at the end of nowhere. All other societies have had to work out the conflicts of resource demand, egos, and many other elements of human nature and some of those elements are ugly.
Western societies have done better than all other large societies and better than most small societies. Our historic and even current sins are real. Our historic and current achievements are far greater. At least we're trying to understand, expiate and change those things which have been sinful. The North Korean leadership glories in its oppression of its own people. So do the mainland Chinese.
