Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, January 21. 2010California Is Not MassachusettsBoxer’s seat is, actually, safer than the “Ted Kennedy” seat proved to be. The percentage of Independent registrations is much lower than in The percentage of safe Democrat voters among Hispanics is higher in Boxer has already amassed a much bigger warchest than the Republican contenders, and the one Republican – Carly Fiorina -- whose personal wealth may offset that is currently less favored among Reps in early polls. Boxer now has $7-million and Fiorina has only $2.5 million mostly “loaned” from herself. In 2004, Boxer raised about $20 million, her well thought of Rep opponent about $6 million. Her re-election victory margin, 20%, was double Kerry’s in Lastly, the national media and wireservices, which are given prominence in even the more moderate San Diego and Sacramento newspapers, and certain featuring in the liberal L.A. and San Francisco newspapers which have much larger populations, will be highlighting every sign of economic rebound in 2010 and downplaying Obama national security blunders, compared to downplaying economic portents and pounding the successful Bush measures on national security when Republican incumbents seek re-election. None of this is to say that Boxer can’t be beat. But, it is very premature and overly optimistic to bet on it. The San Diego Union-Tribune editorial this morning paints a positive calculation. It’ll take much more than that, tremendous focus with a terrific candidate backed by big money, none of which seems in prospect, for Some good news: Today's US Supreme Court decision striking down some limitations in campaign finance laws are predicted to help corporations to contribute more; unions already are pretty maxed out. But, corporations are not as partisan as unions, and more leery in making contributions due to fears of being attacked in the press and by unions. Comments

We can only hope CA has not passed the point of no return.Mexico may quietly claim it one day and no one will care.
Campbell is polling just 10 points behind Boxer. I wouldn't count him out, but first he has to slay the RINO.
The state of the housing market in CA is still very-very bad and it's not getting better with the ecopnomy tanked. Homes even in the Bay Area aren't selling very much or quickly - let alone any new construction. Commercial real-estate is cavernously empty as well throughout Silicon Valley, and the IPO's are way down and whatever might emerge frankly looks pretty weak.
While national security may not make a big impact, the situation for "local security" - Police and Firefighters - is pretty perilous here, with many cities (especially in the Bay Area) have been forced to reduce their Police staffing because of the economic impact of failed policies. In Sacramento the Sheriff has had to lay off 209 deputies due to a “$15 million oversight” - and has acknowledged he may have to relax his rules for issuing CCW permits, because with reduced staff his men can't respond quickly enough - and that has all the hippies and lefties all freaked out. Meanwhile the rains have caused mudslides and more damage in SoCal after a very costly summer of fires across the state. And I don't recall Babs ever coming out here to survey any of that...She's a DC elitist no-show and that can be played up effectively. Tom Campbell unfriendly toward Israel? That would actually play in his favor among all the left-leaning Bay Arayans, if it were true or even mattered. Israel is kinda far from California and west-coast conscioussness - it's a long plane flight, you can get to Hawaii much faster. The only people who harp on it are the Usual Shouting Suspects at Berkeley and SF rallies. ...and yet the state voted down a bunch of tax increases/expensive social programs, etc., in the last special election. Every one of the big spending ballot measures went down in spectacular flames, from conservative Orange County to space cadet central Marin. Californians are in a strange mood right now. Boxer is right to be concerned.
Hasn't california been ruled by the dems for decades? And it is now considered a failed state. How come only the dems get to ask the question.....do you like how things are going? If not, vote for us. I would think the republicans could ask that question (sort of like the one the DNC used for teddy kennedy's seat, do you give the keys to the guy that just ran his truck off the road and walked away?)in this instance.
While it's true that only 37% of MA voters are registered Democrats, it's risible to suggest that more than half of MA voters have no party preference.
When last I checked, MA still allows Independents to vote in the primary of their choice, without declaring a permanent party affiliation. So if you're registered Independent, you can vote for the candidate you want, or you can vote for the other party's candidate that will be the easiest for him to beat. Unless you're going to get directly involved in political party activity, there's absolutely no incentive to declare a party affiliation in MA. If people in MA had to declare a party affiliation to vote in the primary, the percentage of registered Democrats would be enormously higher. You're correct. Mass. has a higher percentage of elected congressmen than CA, for example.
On the other hand, none of the prospective CA Rep candidates for Senate have the populist appeal or campaign savvy of Brown, and Boxer is a very able campaigner compared to Coakley. Don't forget the Delta Smelt......the unemployment and devastation caused by the court ruling and her refusal to support emergency water deliveries in the Central Valley has hurt Hispanics big time.....and could tip the election as this is pounded on by paid ads on Spanish-language TV in the LA market........and will be very hard for union types to brush away...
