We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Can anyone here tell me what is going on with this? This is a job advertisement for the Department of State in MT. MT Just got some big money for "defense" and "security". Looks a little like we are getting ready to attack N. Dakota!

Britain's recent experience with wind energy should be a clear proof that wind and solar are niche energy systems. With daylight short and winds low during the deep cold period, the wind farms were net losses -- the resources required to build and operate them more than offset the energy they were producing.
The space station uses solar power because it works in orbit and we don't have extension cords that long. There are other locations where wind and solar make sense as primary or supplemental power. But not as the main grid.
Geoff ... In addition to the drawbacks you mention, those huge windmills are migrating bird shredders. As you point out,
only in space does solar power work dependably. Here on earth, the panels work efficiently if the sun shines, but not if it doesn't.
All in all, "niche energy systems" is a pretty good descriptor.
By the way, how much of Britain's electricity is generated by nuclear? The figures I have say that France gets about 70% of its electrical generation from nuclear.
I think this guy goes for the power broads more than the T & A type. All I know is that as a mother of several daughters I would not want to see this guy coming through the garden gate--if I did see this type, I would pray it was the process server!

Golly. I guess Faberge Easter Eggs, the revolving stage in one of Nero's residences, the Pyramids and their contents, Bronze Age gold ornaments for tribal leaders... none of that counts, just hamburger[s] and bottled water?
