Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Back-to-reality Monday morning links

I am back from my skiing and family vacation, and trying to catch up with the past week or so of Maggie's. I'd suggest that you do so too, if you have been away. Good stuff, as always.

I fell in love with my explanation about the cold in Peru so much (in response to a posting on Don Surber's blog) I think I'll rehash it here:

I know! I know! I have the explanation of WHY it is COLDER when the glaciers are melting. Think homemade ice cream. All that global warming caused waterspouts over the ocean that sucked up enormous amounts of salt water and deposited it on the glaciers. We all know that adding salt to ice causes it to melt thus absorbing heat and making it colder, otherwise homemade ice cream would never freeze.

See? It is really simple to invent explanations of why it is colder and blame global warming at the same time.

Mmmmm. Home made ice cream. I think I’ll go have some and chill…… heh.

If Scott Brown loses by less then 10 points It's actually a victory for him, we're talking Massachusetts here.
Martha could come back from her vacation comatose and still get elected. Besides she probably went looking for Tiger to get advice on how to skillfully keep out of public sight.

I take it that "Science is too white" in Berkeley is tantamount to claiming that black and Hispanic kids are not good enough to keep up with their fellow white and Asian classmates. I don't know whether the class enrollments justify that interpretation, but it seems racist of the BHS Governance Council to imply it. But in any event, if it's true, the sensible solution is to help kids who fall behind, not penalize kids who do well. The Berkeley folks apparently have no confidence in education as the great leveler in society.
