We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat. God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle-aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men strictly accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well-being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on virtually everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God’s heavenly country club. Santa Claus is another matter. He’s cute. He is nonthreatening. He’s always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without thought of a quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he’s famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus.
Sorry for posting an off-topic comment, but I really want to get this out there. These hard working guys and gals (nearly everything you have has been on a big truck at some point) are stuck with nothing.. Other people in the industry are trying to shore things up, but to have this happen right before Christmas, when the company knew this was coming, and to give no notice whatsoever is unconscionable.
If you see an Arrow truck in your travels, try to spread a little Christmas cheer in whatever form. They went belly-up virtually overnight, stranding 1,400 drivers all over the country. Cut off fuel cards, no notice, no nothing.
Brian in Idaho ... About that 'perfect love casting out fear' thingy. So, who's got perfect love? Let me know so I can go and get me some. Humans are by nature imperfect and sometimes cranky, and their love tends to be that way too.
PJ O'Rourke's views on Santa are correct, on God not so much.
God doesn't play politics or sports. To who is He politically connected to? God is subtle and sentimental. I don't think he holds the mortgage on everything; he shares some of that with the devil and man. Not so hard to get into his country club. I will let you know when I pass through death's doors. Two things I know for sure about God: He loves the truth and He holds men accountable for their actions. I know the last 2 scare the shit out of you, BD, but we'll rumble later on that. :)
PJ insults Santa by comparing him to dems. As PJ suggested, Santa is jolly. Dems in their best mood can best be described as dour. While PJ is right Santa gives gifts expecting nothing in return, Dems OTOH demand your freedom in exchange for 'gifts' and Santa did not steal the toys from one constituency to give them to another. Santa is nonthreatening, but who can describe dems as nonthreatening? Anyone checked to see what they have planned for the USA lately? Santa is a symbol of the spirit of giving. Dems are symbolic of the spirit of taking. Nope, call me feeble minded, but I can't see any similarity between dems and Santa.
