We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I can offer a worse explanation. In monarchies, sovereign honors are rendered to the monarch -- who stands to recognize the salute. Does His Hopeful Changeness think he is our sovereign now?
The president could properly put his hand on his heart or salute as the officers are doing. This pose is condescending and/or insulting.

When not in uniform, the alternative is a correct position of attention.

I can go either way - attention or hand-on-heart. The "I'm really bored" hands clasped over groin is insulting.

Obama is more annoying to more and more Americans every day. He is not a good representative for this country. What a mistake this country made when we essentially elected a President by affirmative action.

I should say the always power drunk Democrats, and easily duped Independents, are to blame. The Democrats must be made to pay big time in 2010 before they run this country into the ground.

2010 and 2012 for the Democrats needs to go down as 1932 did for Republicans. A real power shift. Democrats cannot be trusted with the portfolio of the greatest nation on earth.

Me too, but I'll take anything other than a Dem if that's all I can get. Be choosy where you can be and take what you have to where you have to. Too many 'true' conservatives sitting out the last election because the non Dem choices weren't good enough helped put us in this situation.

I'm not big on hand on heart either, but he's our commander-in-chief at a formal event. That he remember and follow an ages old protocol to show his respect is not, in my opinion, asking very much. I think this occasion deserves a little more reverence than just being quiet - no, a lot more.

He's supposed to be honoring those that gave their lives for us. I think he has shown how much he honors them. I read that troop morale in Afghanistan is low. Do you think that he transmits this message in other ways?

It would be nice if our president showed a little class. Even Clinton could manage that from time to time, but so far the classiest thing he's done is call Kanye West a jackass. It's not even sad.

He's also not an affirmative action president, he's a reverse discrimination president. Nobody wants to say anything bad about a brotha', damn the guy could light up a bong in this photo and the news would be okay with it, so as not to come off as racially insensitive and all.

The gentleman second from right in the picture above is using the proper indication of respect when clad in civilian clothes. That is, if he isn't the President of the United States. Obama evidently has SASS [short attention span syndrome] because just a few days ago, when he hauled the White House Press Corps to Dover, Delaware to show them how much he respected the return of our fallen heroes to our soil, he did know how to salute. [Well, pretty well anyway].

As John says above, maybe his barn door was open. Or maybe he was just bored, as usual.

As a photographer myself, I don't usually get excited about these "gotcha" photos. More than half the time a photo is NOT truth, that being said it does seem that this president gets caught showing a lack of enthusiasm to the symbols of our country a awful lot.
After he was elected and before he took office I decided to hope that perhaps President Obama would make a extra effort to make at least a show of patriotism. To defuse the criticism of his opponents if for no other reason. That does not seem to be the case.
Now I'm trying to decide, for myself only, is his behavior because he was brought up so very differently than anyone I know, or did that background in fact imbue him with a dangerous attitude towards the United States? Rather than a fundamental reverence to the history and achievements of this country does he look at us as a flawed work.

I wonder what Mahatma Gandhi would has changed about the British Empire, if he had been elected Prime Minister?

Holding one's hand over one's heart IS, indeed, a big deal, when that hand belongs to the Commander in Chief. Standing respectfully does not include grabbing one's crotch while others are respecting what his office and nation stand for. And he's our HOPE?

Like all leftists, Brakabama deeply loves his country. His country, however, exists in his perverted little mind. The real one...the one that exists and has for over 200 years and is being honored by the other people in that photo is a monstrous and evil thing to them. They despise it with every fiber of their being.
