We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I read "Charlie Wilson's War" at least a couple of years after I saw the movie version and was left with two unshakeable impressions:
Charlie Wilson was a sleaze, not for his drinking and womaninzing, but the way he spent taxpayer dollars as if they were his own, by the billions.
Afghanistan is as close to hell as you will find on this earth. Armies have been trying to conquer it for hundreds of years, to no avail. Between a landscape that presents unbelievable challenges to a people that are willing to fight any insurgent to the last man, achieving victory there, by our definition, is simply impossible. By comparison Viet Nam is a cakewalk.
