Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Good music in old Bridgeport

Gathering of the Vibes this week. h/t, reader.


Buddy Guy, Levon Helm, Crosby, Stills and Nash. How bad is that?


Photo: The beach at beautiful Seaside Park, in the winter. If it weren't for the Mob, crooked pols, urban renewal, public housing projects, welfare, and the flight of industrial jobs after WW 2 seeking lower taxes and union-free locations, Bridgeport might still be the fine, crime-free and prosperous Park City that it once was.


The sad old city is a case study in how government good intentions payoffs generally fail horribly. Too bad they didn't take Texas as a model.

Ah, and Bridgeport Machines Co. went out of business in 2002. Bridgeport mills are still around, but they are now manufactured in Elmira by Hardinge. At least the US retains some toolmaking capacity.

I might observe that at least 53% of Americans have proven themselves to be tools... and many of them will be swarming to Bridgeport this weekend.

Let's hope the old saying: Tool me once, Tool me twice..." proves fruitful in 2010.

Speaking of tools... why does my push mower rev up and slow down and rev up and slow down? A nice old man at Lowe's got me a new spark plug and whispered that the Mexicans were shoplifting more lately, but the new plug has made no difference.
It still cuts, but it sounds like it's on a respirator. ..sigh... :(

Air filter clogged? Water in the gas (are you in New England?) Throttle stuck open? Oil needs changing? Time for a cocktail? Any of these reasons could explain it.

Oil is okay. Air filter is new. Water.... I doubt it because, oddly, it's burning way more gas than usual. I'm in VA. But come to think of it, the water goes to the bottom, right? Maybe that's it as there is liquid there when it runs out of gas. I'll dump it and see if that works.

Is a two cycle or four cycle engine ?

Try a little WD-40 on the linkage pivot points that attaches
to the carburetor.

If four cycle:
you might have 'bad' fuel (old fuel will congeal and loose
it's volatility)...also the jets and orifices inside the carb. collect varnish over time. Add fuel conditioner to the fuel tank.
Put the remaining in your auto's tank.

If machine will be stowed for a period ( winter)add Sta-Bil
to the tank before you put it to bed.

If you suspect water in the fuel tank, water will be at the
bottom. The tank will need to be completely emptied.

If two cycle:
verify the oil/gas mixture is correct.

I use high octane fuel in small machines.

And it wasn't called the Park City for nothing. Once the cultural capital of CT, it's largest city; it shoulda been the state capital. Just goes to show how influential the insurance lobby was in the State way back when. Hartford was virtually a wasteland at the time.
