Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Interesting article at the Dr. X link. I have one question: I wonder if that manipulation of language to uphold the narcissist's sense of grandiosity can also be used to build up one's 'chronic' lack of self-esteem. That would be the antithesis of what the article notes, but I just wonder if the same method is ever employed by those who are the antithesis of the narcissist.

"Spending on useless crap." Years ago I read an article that still haunts me. Someone had interviewed a lot of impoverished elderly people and asked about the purchases they most regretted from earlier in their lives. He said it was heartbreaking how often they said they regretted buying ridiculous stuff like fancy new toasters, and how differently they would have spent their money if they had been able to grasp how much more important it was to save for the future. It can sure take the fun out of immediate gratification of the desire for a cool new toy, to think of yourself at age 90 and unable to buy something essential to life and comfort.

"Climate Change" instead of "Global Warming," "Underrepresented Groups" instead of "minorities." Don't forget "Health Care" instead of "Medicine." Euphemisms RULE!!! We must distance ourselves from our eyes vs what they say.
