Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

New England Real Estate: ACK rentals

Nantucket summer rental prices are getting reasonable this year. Recession pricing. Places that were $55,000/week now $45,000/week.


Polpis cottage in upper photo now available for only $20,000/week in August.


Lower cottage only $2700/week and available now in August. Seems a lot more reasonable to me, and less pretentious. But outdoor shower "not enclosed"? What? OK, watch me shower in the sun if you want to.


Once you have showered outdoors, you never want to shower indoors again.

Opie has given me another good reason to avoid Nantucket this year - outdoor showering!

I agree. Outdoor showers are a wonderful summertime thing.

Nantucket is very nice. Although the prices are designed to keep all but the very rich out.

My cousin, the dumb rich one who voted for Obama, used to own a house on Nantucket. He sold it back in the 1990s after he had a party for all his cousins who still survived. Beautiful island. Great party. Okay ... maybe he wasn't so dumb about real estate. He just had a brain fart about politics.

Ah Nantucket. The crapfest of offshore vacation destinations. The island whose motto is "Nantucket: Why Pay Less?"

I've done it twice for two weeks at a time and found it the roach motel of destinations.

The only way I'd get even close is on a strafing and bombing run.

We had an outdoor shower in Mandal Estate on St. Thomas. There was a frame over the shower and screening on the frame; while we showered we often watched Iguanas walking overhead. It was especially nice in a tropical downpour...that was the life.

Yeah, I got no jones to keep up with the joneses. We were on the poor side of the island, but living like royalty. Life was so sweet I can just sit here and smile about it still...people ought to try to keep up with that.

Amazing how poor can be so relative. There's alway someone worse off. Who is that poorest I wonder. The poorest on the planet. Many applicants I suspect.

I'm not denigrating relative wealth here... just a thought bubble.

While a bit off the true topic, poor is relative. Most of the "poor" in this country do not know what poor is.

I am grateful for what I have both in terms of opportunity and material comfort. But for anyone who may ask, I have worked my unilateral %#* off to get it. No silver spoons or free lunch here.

Yes, perhaps off topic, as we usually are here. But I think that's what I said... that poor is relative. I've traveled, seen some of the worst, and am also grateful for what I have. Started work at eleven... and still haven't stopped, likely won't until I die. It's all good.
