Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Anchoress reminds us that



The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (Right Judgment), Fortitude (Courage), Knowledge, Piety (Reverence) and Fear of the Lord (Awe of God).



Good gifts indeed. Who does not hunger for these?

I don't. At least not the 'fear' gift. How is that a gift? God wants love unconditionally. Anything done out of fear generates loathing. That is not what he's about.

I believe the Priests of Pride are the chief promoters of the fear factor. It is the surefire way to guarantee adherence to the enigma that is God.

I have a problem with the fear thing, too, but I think the original language, here translated as "fear", is better interpreted as "awe", as in the face of unutterable majesty--or of an incomprehensible enigma . . .

Yes, but fear is definitely part of religion. And it is amusing to see it translated that way. If you don't need fear, you don't need Hell.

As readers know, I am a Christian. However, I neither believe in Heaven or Hell - at least as they seem to be often thought of.

As my fear diminishes as I age, my awe in the face of Creation increases.

I don't believe in hell, but it has a place in discourse. I once told a lawyer there was a hot little corner in hell reserved for him. It felt so good saying it. Had I said there's a hot little sand dune in the Sahara reserved for you, it wouldn't have been the same.

Ah, that good old fire and brimstone. Just think how bad we'd be without it.

Some even choose Hell on earth by claiming their freedom not to believe
