With the opening of trout season fast approaching, I felt we ought to open the season with this re-post -

Dave Barry's piece begins:

The excellent pike fishery here in Western MA has stolen my heart away from fly-lining trout although I still own equipment......sage being my rod company of choice.

I have a 5ft sage that I still use to occasionally fish the brook trout stream on my own property.

I was going to try fly-fishing, although I thought I could catch them easily enough with a little honey on the kitchen counter. But then I tried to tie a lure, and I just couldn't tie one small enough for a fly to bite on it. Even with hardware magnifying goggles over my glasses.
Ice-fishing didn't work out well either.

Years ago a friend tried to teach me the art of flycasting. After thirty minutes he gave up, saying I looked like an old lady trying to kill a bat with a broomstick.

I went back to my trusted spinning tackle. When I go fishing, I like to actually catch fish - and I eat 'em, too.

Lol Geoff. You can end up with a nice sweater spin fishing btw.

Flycasting is complicated by the high brows who like to think they're a special class.

1) The rod is firmly flexed between the 10 and 2 oclock positions.

2) A perceptable pause is added between the backcast and forecast.

3) See 1) and 2)

The right water with the correct fly closes the deal.
