We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The Captain was responding to being attacked for not having kids. Nowhere does he say why he made that decision: He simply explains the benefits of not having them. He may have seen some things that convinced him he would not be a good father - that is, seen something like KRW mentions. Good for him. I've seen many parents who should have been sterilized so they couldn't have children. Too bad they didn't have the insight the Captain has. It's not an obligation here as it is in rural China where parents demand a boy child to take care of them when they get old and where unwanted female offspring drink fertilizer around puberty when it dawns on them they are not wanted, that they are indeed a burden on their parents.
You spend enough time witnessing child abuse and you begin to see it as the worst sin in the world. Giving birth to an unwanted child is a crime in my book, right up there with shoving the unwanted into the foster care system.
In the end, how dare anyone criticize someone for something so personal?
