We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The principal feature of American liberalism is sanctimoniousness. By loudly denouncing all bad things — war and hunger and date rape — liberals testify to their own terrific goodness. More important, they promote themselves to membership in a self-selecting elite of those who care deeply about such things.... It's a kind of natural aristocracy, and the wonderful thing about this aristocracy is that you don't have to be brave, smart, strong or even lucky to join it, you just have to be liberal.
I think an additional quality that is essential to the liberal community is an absence of individual courage. You cannot have any will of your own, any courage of your own, any willingness to stand alone and defend any thing that the liberals find to be in their way of "change".
Tom Lehrer described it well over 40 years ago with The Folk Song Army . We are the Folk Song Army.
Everyone of us cares.
We all hate poverty, war, and injustice,
Unlike the rest of you squares.
While Lehrer was and is a Liberal, he can find humor at all ends of the spectrum. That sneering didn't begin with Dubya.
Nailed it - especially note that their 'deep' care is a mile wide and an inch deep. If they were truly concerned about all the bad things in this world there would be a lot more 'Mother Theresa' types.
Ultimately, they are only concerned with serving themselves.
