We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
President Obama's newly named Economic Recovery Advisory Board, the real-world Americans being asked to help solve the nation's financial crisis, includes a union executive who took the Fifth in a federal probe, a billionaire whose failed bank pioneered the subprime mortgage market, and deep-pocket donors who gave or gathered nearly $1.2 million for the president's campaign. In all, 11 of the 16 board members donated or raised money for Democrats in the last election.
What's with the cost of mattresses? It still takes just as long to get a good night's sleep in 2009 as it did in 1950. Makes sleeping on the sofa seem like a good deal. There's a good joke in there somewhere, but I can't put my finger on it...
Have you noticed that you can make a greenie's head explode by suggesting that the difference in cost between an item at Walmart and the equivalent item at an independent local outlet is an excellent proxy for the difference in CO2 output of the respective supply chains?
Based upon my experience of '50's TV's, freezers, desks, vacuum-cleaners, sofas, and radios vs today's; I would say that the "hours" in the chart is an excellent proxy for mass.
In my observation, the contemporary mattresses I've moved lately are just as massive as the old '50's ones I moved in my grandparent's places two decades ago.
I want to know where they found a 32-piece silverware set for 0.8*$18=$14.40.
I suspect that they are comparing a silverware or silver-plate flatware set from the 1950 Sears catalog with a stainless-steel flatware set today. One can find 32-piece silverware sets for $400 today, which is about parity with their 1950 example.
But as with all consumer-price index comparisons, it is impossible to compare like with like in every case, and I suspect stainless has replaced silver in the same way that LCD panels with VLSIC chips have replaced cathode-ray tubes with point-to-point-wired valve electronics. Good on the students for doing the legwork:
Lucianne didn't scratch the surface of that committee. Some of the key players who directly took the steps which set up the market blow-off are on it. If i can get un depressed enough I'll write it up later.
Excellent rant by Cramer! But the part I don't get is where Cramer says this is not the 'middle of the road' Obama that he thought he was voting for. Putting his soaring empty rhetoric and his two vacuous books aside, what part of his actual record and his roots in Chicago politics and his lack of actual executive experience and all his radical racist and leftist associations did Cramer, an otherwise very smart man, lead Cramer to think he was voting for a pro-growth middle of the road new Democrat? I can't believe all the freakin naive suckers out there who should have been smarter than that and who now have serious buyer's remorse.
The reason Obama and staff are moving so aggressively is that they probably understand that they have no more than two years to get as much of this radical agenda crammed in as possible before they lose their leverage and hopefully in four years lose their job.
"no more than two years to get much of this radical agenda done" phil? I give them less than that. There seems to be a groundswell of disillusion out here in flyover country which can only grow. I suspect they overreached badly in these first three weeks. It's a result of of preaching to the fatuous choir, rather than trying to take the temperature of all sides of public opinion.
I hope you're right Mrs. Matthews. They have the raw numbers to do what they want, the question will be how many of their own they can keep on board. I hope this rumbling turns into real opposition soon.
