We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The remark is especially humorous if you've ever spent much time listening to or watching concert performances (on PBS etc) with concert musicians Both my sister and her husband are such and it will drive you crazy listening to them hyper-criticize what sounds delightful and perfectly enjoyable to those of us "less talented" laymen. Illustrates perfectly the idea of "letting the perfect become the enemy of the good (or even great)"!
"Skookumchuck" - you could only be from Western WA. Olympia / Centralia or thereabouts? I lived in King / Pierce County for about 20 years until I moved back home. If you think professional musicians out there are hypercritical, my sister and husband are concert musicians in NYC. You can't watch PBS without a running commentary on the conductor and individual musicians you see on the screen - some of them have pretty bizarre / funny / interesting stories to tell.
