Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Asa Yoelson

Asa Yoelson, aka Al Jolson, one of the top American entertainers of the 20th Century. A reader reminded us that Dylan thinks of Jolson and Sinatra as his role models/inspirations for making a song come alive with good phrasing.

Bird Dog .... Thanks for the memories. I hadn't realized that Jolson was quite handsome as a young man. He was popular a few years before Sinatra, who was a scrawny young man when young, and never exactly handsome, although I'm sure all his multitudes of girlfriends would disagree. Was Jolson similarly doted on?

That is Larry Parks who played Jolson in two? movies about 1950.

Larry did a tremendous job. Jolson dubbed the singing. And Jolson had a mild career revival due to the movies.

But Parks vanished, I believe it had something to do with the anti-communist blacklists, aka as McCarthyism.

I'll leave that to those who care to investigate.
