Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Allegory, Irony and Ambiguity

Prof. John Sutherland says those have been the three dominant story-telling tools in English, since Beowulf.


His Classics of British Lit. at The Teaching Company is a delight. (I hate the word "literature." I prefer to call it "story-telling.") Get the CDs and, as Mark Levin would say, Thank me.

I ordered the download version and am about halfway through. These are pretty good at the price (48 1/2-hour pieces for $65), but Sutherland sometimes panders a bit. He seems to be trying awfully hard to reach an audience that supposedly will recoil from all the Christian and male-chauvinist and imperial hegemonist undertones in all this classic literature. When he stops apologizing for his material, he has some interesting things to say.
