Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Whenever I see these paintings I think that this is when the modern world began.

OK - what about these pictures suggests that?

For me, it's the very fact that this is a subject for a painting. Until then Western art served either the church or the ruling class. Suddenly these kinds of scenes - and still lifes - become valid subjects with a market among the new merchant class.

This was the little ice age. It was the 32 consecutive cyclical global cooling since the last ice age. The 33rd consecutive global warming began about 1850 and we are enjoying that today. The global warming interludes are very good for humans and we have enjoyed the benefits without really being aware of it. The 33rd naturally occurring global cooling will begin one day soon and when it does mankind will suffer greatly. We cannot support a worldwide population of 7 billion in a climate where most of our food will not grow. Climate change will be deadly but it won't be global warming that is dangerous it will be the global cooling.
