We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Luther ... It could also make Israel even more of a target for all the Bad Guy terrorists in the Middle East, and make her even more hated by other, less resource-fortunate, more lazy countries and peoples.
It's ironic, too. When, in the shake-out of agreement at the close of the Second World War, the Mid-East countries reluctantly agreed on a strip of property to give to Holocaust survivors as a homeland, they picked the poorest area they could find -- a plot of land which was a combination of desert and poor swampy land, which none of the rest of them wanted, and which had never been extensively settled because of its drawbacks.
The Israelis accepted the 'gift' as the best they could do, and proceeded to turn it into a little agrcultural Paradise, using cutting edge technology which they developed as they went along. They built factories and manufactured top quality goods and equipment which the rest of the world quickly decided to buy. Emigres from the rest of the world moved to Israel to join in the development.
Talk about irony, as I said above. Now the governments of the hostile Mid-Eastern countries are going to skew the facts and insist that they were cheated, and they deserve a share of this rich energy find. I see nothing but more grief for our Israeli ally.
You know what else is ironic? The Israelis have the world's second greatest military - second to us. From that little tiny country, they rule. Can you imagine if they could live their lives without the constant threats?
It would be nice if this find put them into a bargaining position like something out of The Godfather.
(I wasn't going to say 'Godfather', but it just typed out from the keyboard....)
True, good news is good news. Then... let's call this exceptionally good news, if true, for the Israeli's.
I'm not sure, though, that a MAD equivalency would be desirable. Not when the only nation close to having such a capability, Iran (its leadership at least), would consider a first strike the height of diplomacy and behavior from their perspective.
For now it is enough to allow Israel to defend itself. But between her government and our new one, that is not at all certain in the near future.
I didn't say MAD would be desirable. I said it would change diplomacy and behavior in this matter.
As I failed say explicitly, MAD will not arise anyway. Israel cannot destroy the Islamic world or the Arabs or whatever we choose to call their opponents. Israel could only destroy some big cities, etc. and take over limited amounts of land.
Then they would still face millions or billions covering much of the world. Those remaining would be even more opposed to Israel.
Yet Israel can be destroyed and erased. And however much that would be lamented or denounced the fact would remain: no Israel.
Modern Israel has astonishing vigor and a short but incredible history. But it cannot stand alone. Them thar's the facts, or at least my opinion. If Obama signals we will look away.......
Change how, then. For the better? More realistic? Seems to me that Israel would be the loser in such a situation. She holds all the cards at this time, in that sense... were another to be at the table... well, personally, I can't imagine how that could in anyway be a positive thing for Israel.
But you say MAD will not arise? Who will do it and how is Iran to be stopped in its preparations.
And please don't forget... we also face millions and billions.
ron... I agree. But... there's only 48% percent of us. We the people may always support Israel... but our government?
Dear Leader has already been informed that without Mossad, our CIA would be bereft. If he turns his back on Israel, he's turning his back on 100% of the American people. Let's hope he's not that dumb.
